White Oak

White Oak

Today, we went to Newnan, GA to play another Canongate course at White Oak.  The weather was so much nicer than it has been the last 2 Saturdays.  There was no rain, and the temperatures were much warmer.
Brodie had a higher level of competition this week, with more experienced competitors, so we knew it might be a tough one.  Also, the sand traps were a little crazy!
Luckily he stayed out of these!
But, he started out great and was playing well until the 6th hole.  After his ball landed in the lake, Brodie lost his focus.  He felt defeated and couldn't get out of his "head".  He was so mad and frustrated he didn't even try on the last 3 holes.
This was a first for him.
Usually, he can pull himself back out of it and recover, but today he basically gave up.
He managed to finish in the top 5, barely, at 5th place.
Had he not thrown in the towel, he was in line to finish 2nd or 3rd.
Still eeked out 5th place
We had a chat with him after and emphasized that it does not matter to us what place he finishes, as long as he tries his best.  We also talked about ways to deal with frustration between holes.
He loves the game so much, and is such a perfectionist.  He expects to be as good as players who have been on this tour for 3 years, but we keep reminding him he is just getting started and has to give it some time.

Chateau Elan

Chateau Elan, Braselton, GA

Brodie played in his 2nd US Kids Tournament this morning at Chateau Elan in Braselton, GA.
It was FREEZING cold.  Literally.  We thought we might have a frost delay because it was lightly snowing all around the area.  We had left Columbus at 4:30AM to drive up and were thankful it started on time - 8:27AM tee time.  It was truly so windy and cold that my hands and toes were numb, painfully numb.  How those children played in that weather is beyond me.
Last week, it had been difficult for the boys to play on the rainy, wet course.  Even though it was FREEZING, they played much better today.
Brodie was thrilled to get his 1st par, and excitedly ran to tell me, "Mommy!  I got my first par in a US Kids Tournament!"  To our excitement, he followed with 2 more pars and a birdie!  After that little streak, he got a bogey, and claimed he was the "worst golfer ever".  He shook it off though and finished in 2nd Place, just 2 strokes behind the leader.
He was thrilled!
I am still so amazed at how well he is playing against other boys in his age group, who have been playing in these tournaments for 2+ years.  It really is exciting to see him grow and excel. :)
